RIESsearchING @ Schloss Vollrads!

Hi Riesling Fans,

Once more, it has been such a long time…
But again, I started a fresh adventure!
5 months ago I started working at San Gent.
A second concept of Sang Hoon Degeimbre (l’Air du temps **)
Here I am also Maitre Sommelier! New beginning!
Now the startup has gone great, I can focus again on RIESsearchING!

Willkomen im Riesling!
RIESsearchING at Schloss Vollrads!

2 years ago on Prowein I was in a Masterclass of aged Rieslings of Schloss Vollrads where I encountered the owner Dr.Rowald Hepp. And so I payed him a visit at the Schloss!

The ambiance is so cool there! I really loved it.

Which also really struck my attention is that Schloss Vollrads only produces Riesling!!!
I was truly on my place over there!

We arrived and first had a lunch in the garden! Very refined and really tasty!

Afterwards we were ready for the tour!
They carried 6 bottles with them and trough the Schloss we tasted the different Rieslings!
First up the Summer Riesling we tasted it near the well.
As it says it is a real summer wine. Very fresh, easy drinking, fruity with a medium finish.

Afterwards we went to the stainless tanks, where we tasted the basic Riesling Kabinett.
We also tasted the Kabinett from the tank from the new vintage!
Not ready Riesling really tastes most of the time of pears I think. You experience the amazingly high acidity and a very fruity pear like character and sometimes it also has something like asparagus. It’s just interesting to see it evolve.
The tank room is so amazingly large! I don’t know how many tanks are in there, but it’s real crazy.

We also visited the cellars where there are holes in the sealing in every room to let light come in.
And near the walls there are this stream that runs through the whole the cellar to control the humidity.
Truly great thinking in earlier years!

We went to the bottling room, which looks different than others because of the very specific bottle shapes and the bottles are closed with a glass stopper. So this is all custom machines.
Here we tasted the Spatlese Trocken.
Which is still very dry, but delivers a fuller body, is more complex and has a more pronounced minerality.
This one has as well a longer finish.

Later we went to the vineyard where they try to work as natural as possible, so lots of bugs to see on the leaves!

Here we tasted the Feinherb Riesling.
I already said after I had my trip to Germany I have a newfound respect for Feinherb Riesling!
Besides, this one is nicely balanced, the sweetness is not flabby because the acidity is so super high that it balances it out. Fruity but fresh. Medium finish. Actually, what you expect from an easy drinking wine, but it has some more complexity because “ hallo” its from Schloss Vollrads.

Afterward, we went back to the shop where tasted a Spëtlese.
Which is sweeter, but nonetheless very high acidity, so not sticky. Great stone fruit almost confit and a great minerality. A little immature, so just a medium finish… this is going to get better with age. I’m certain of it!

In the store we bought some Riesling.

My mom had to buy a limited edition, also nice easy drinking Riesling in a very decent bottle.
A Magnum of course!
If she does something, she does it well!

This was my visit to Schloss Vollrads in a nutshell!
If your in the neighborhood you should go visit it for yourself!

I am getting myself ready for Prowein again! The 18 and 19 the of March, again 2 full days non stop wine!

I’m keeping you posted.

Thx for the read. Enjoy your Riesling and see you the next RIESsearchING!
